Is It Okay to Wear Braces Again to Address New Orthodontic Issues?

Braces are considered a rite of passage for many young children and teens—but it’s very much possible for adults to benefit from orthodontic treatment as well. That said, what about those who’ve already worn braces in the past? Is it possible to undergo a second round of treatment in order to address issues that have reappeared or new orthodontic problems that have developed? The answer is usually yes, and for many good reasons! Here’s what you need to know.

Why Might I Need Braces a Second Time?

There are a few different reasons a patient might need braces a second time, including:

  • Changes over time – Our teeth and jaws don’t stay exactly the same throughout our lifetimes. Even if you wore braces when you were younger, natural changes in your bite, shifting teeth, or even aging can alter your smile over time.
  • Not wearing your retainer – This tends to be a common reason for needing orthodontic treatment a second time. Retainers keep the teeth in their corrected positions following treatment, and without consistent wear, teeth can slowly drift back into their original, incorrect positions.
  • It was initially planned – Some children benefit from early orthodontic treatment (sometimes called phase 1 orthodontics), which is sometimes used to set up future orthodontic treatment and often makes results easier to fine-tune.
  • Trauma or dental work – Injuries, tooth loss, or certain dental procedures can change the way teeth fit together, sometimes warranting the need for orthodontic adjustments later in life.

A Second Round of Braces Is a Good Thing

There’s no shame in needing braces again; it’s in your smile’s best interest! Correct dental alignment makes brushing and flossing easier, which lowers your risk of cavities and gum disease. Likewise, orthodontics also improves your bite function, meaning you’ll have an easier time eating, speaking, and moving your jaw—while also mitigating the chances of jaw strain or TMJ issues. Of course, a straighter smile also lends you far more confidence in your daily life!

Plus, it’s also worth mentioning that dental technology continues to get better and better, meaning that today’s orthodontic treatment options are more comfortable and streamlined than ever before. You’ll likely enjoy a smoother experience the second time around!

Many adults and even teens end up going through orthodontic treatment more than once. What matters most is that you’re taking steps to protect your oral health moving forward—so don’t think of it as a failure or step backwards, but rather, an investment in your smile.
