Children’s MassHealth: How Does It Work?

MassHealth is short for the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services and is a state-funded program that provides affordable orthodontic care to children and families living in the state of Massachusetts.
When enrolling, you must meet certain criteria to be eligible for this type of Medicaid, including:
- Your child is under the age of 21
- Braces are deemed medically necessary
- You must be a resident of Massachusetts
- You must be a citizen of the United States
- Your family income will be considered
Orthodontic Services Covered Under Children’s MassHealth

MassHealth offers coverage for traditional metal braces as well as additional components that are essential to ensure a thorough and successful plan from start to finish. This can include the consultation, braces, any appliances, and the retainer your child will need after the braces are removed.
It’s unlikely that Invisalign will be covered by MassHealth.
MassHealth Coverage for Adults

There are few available forms of coverage for adults who have MassHealth. Since it is more limited in services offered, it is more likely to cover those pertaining to an adult’s preventive dental care (i.e., regular dental checkups and cleanings). This program is not likely to offer orthodontic coverage for adults.
Instead, if you are considering braces of any kind, you can inquire about alternative payment options to help minimize your out-of-pocket costs.
Prevention is the Key to a Healthy Smile

Prevention to avoid orthodontics isn’t as simple as keeping regular dental checkups and cleanings to avoid cavities and gum disease. Oftentimes, a child’s bite or jaw position is out of their control. However, early tooth loss without treatment or facial trauma can lead to orthodontic treatment in the future. By staying on top of problems before your child’s oral and facial structures begin to move the wrong way, you may be able to mitigate their need for orthodontics in the future.
