4 Tips That Make Removing Your Invisalign a Breeze

If you’ve just started wearing Invisalign, you’re probably feeling pretty excited to be on your way to a straighter and more confident smile! However, as convenient as these clear aligners may be, some patients still find themselves struggling to get used to their treatment, particularly when it comes to removing the aligners for meals and hygiene. Luckily, things tend to get easier the longer you wear Invisalign, but in the meantime, here are some tips that’ll help you master the art of removing them quickly and safely.

1. Start from the Back

The easiest way to remove your aligners is to begin with the back molars, rather than the front teeth. Gently grip under the edge of the aligner near a back tooth and slowly lift it away, working your way forward on one side and then moving to the other. This helps release the aligner evenly and prevents unnecessary pressure on the front teeth.

2. Wash & Dry Your Hands

Slippery fingers make aligners harder to grip, so always be sure to thoroughly wash and dry your hands before removing them. The better your grip, the less likely you are to drop or damage your trays. Avoid using lotions or oils on your hands before removing them, too.

3. Try an Invisalign Removal Tool

Aligner removal tools are small, inexpensive devices designed to make removal easier, especially for Invisalign patients with attachments. They provide better leverage, reduce the strain on your fingers, and help to protect the aligners from accidental damage. You can purchase these at most pharmacies or grocery stores, or your orthodontist will give you some.

4. Don’t Remove After a Cold Drink

You shouldn’t remove your trays immediately after having something cold to drink, as the plastic may be less flexible when exposed to cooler temperatures. However, that doesn’t mean to drink something very hot to warm your mouth up; hot temperatures might warp the aligners! Room temperature is your best bet.

Those first few days with a new set of aligners are often the most snug, but as your teeth adjust, things will become easier. So if you’re struggling early on, don’t fret and stay the course!
