Toward the end of your orthodontic treatment, you might be a ball of emotions. Excited to see your new smile, happy you can eat whatever you’d like again, and probably a bit apprehensive if you don’t know what the final appointment will entail. With this in mind, keep reading to learn what to expect while getting your braces removed, as well as what life after braces entails!

How Are Braces Removed?

Patients often think that braces removal is a complicated process. In reality, the brackets are designed to come off easily! In addition to having a special instrument for this part of the process, your orthodontist will be able to locate the weakest spots on your braces, helping them to gently and quickly complete this step. Once the brackets and wires are completely removed, the remaining adhesive will be buffed away too.

Does Getting Your Braces Removed Hurt?

Naturally, many patients are curious if getting their braces removed will hurt. Don’t worry – it’s both quick and painless. In fact, many patients report only feeling a slight pressure, which is immediately followed by overwhelming excitement from seeing their new and improved smile!

What Comes Next?

Remember, braces can only guide your teeth into their properly aligned positions; it’s up to you to keep them there. That’s why your orthodontist will provide you with a custom-made retainer along with instructions on how often you should wear it. While this varies from patient to patient, wearing it at least each evening should be a lifelong best practice. After all, it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent orthodontic relapse!

How To: Care For Your Retainer

Typically, retainers last for five to seven years. However, the exact lifespan will depend largely on how well you care for it. To keep it in pristine condition, make sure to:

  • Remove it before eating or completing your oral hygiene routine
  • Place it in its storage case when you aren’t using it (not in a napkin)
  • Don’t use harsh chemicals, like bleach, to clean it
  • Clean it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and water twice a day
  • Don’t use hot water since this can warp its shape

Getting your braces removed is exciting – you’re so close to seeing the results of your hard work! Fortunately, the process is quick and easy too, so there’s no need to feel nervous leading up to your appointment either.
