Are you planning on sharing a kiss with a special someone underneath the mistletoe? Maybe you’re going to be locking lips while welcoming in 2023! Whatever the case may be, you don’t have to worry – your braces won’t get in the way. To ensure they don’t, keep the below tips in mind.

Tip #1: Brush, Floss, and Rinse Beforehand

Few things are worse than leaning in to kiss someone and immediately noticing a foul odor on their breath. Yuck! Naturally, implementing a solid oral hygiene routine is crucial for everyone, but it’s especially important for patients with braces since the brackets and wires can easily trap food particles and debris. So, before you leave, make sure to brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash thoroughly.

Tip #2: Going to Dinner? Don’t Eat Anything Pungent

If your date involves a meal, then it’s imperative that you avoid pungent foods like onions and garlic. After you’re done eating, refer to point one: brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash. To make this easy on-the-go, keep travel-sized oral hygiene products close by – your date will thank you for it!

Tip #3: Use Dental Wax

Brackets and wires have the potential to irritate the soft tissue in your mouth, most often during the first few weeks or months of your treatment. This can result in a bit of discomfort, which might not put you in the most romantic mood. The good news is that’s where dental wax comes in. A small piece will go a long way in protecting your lips, tongue, and gums. Since the material is waterproof too, you won’t have to worry about constantly replacing it either!

Tip #4: Take It Slow

One of the most important pieces of advice to keep in mind is: take it slow. Accidentally bumping your partner’s lips with your braces can be painful for them and embarrassing for you. So, stick to closed-lip kisses and be gentle!

Tip #5: Wear Chapstick

Chapped lips are common during the winter months. Unfortunately, this can result in an unpleasant, scratchy kiss, which isn’t ideal. That’s why it’s important to routinely apply Chapstick or lip balm!

When it comes time to lean in for a kiss, you don’t want to be second-guessing yourself because of your braces. Thanks to the above tips, you won’t have to!
