If you’ve just had your braces removed, you’re probably feeling pretty ecstatic about your newly straightened smile! However, your orthodontic journey isn’t quite over yet. One of the most important steps after completing treatment is wearing and properly caring for your retainer. A retainer keeps your teeth in their new positions, protecting all the hard work that went into straightening your smile. Luckily, this is easier than it sounds, and keeping your retainer clean and in great shape is simple. Here are some tips to keep in mind.
Tip #1. Remove Your Retainer Before Eating
One of the most important things to remember is taking your retainer out before every meal or snack. Eating with a retainer in your mouth traps food and bacteria against your teeth, increasing the risk of plaque buildup and tooth decay. It can also damage or warp the retainer itself. Before sitting down to eat, place your retainer directly in its protective case, and never wrap it in a napkin or set it on a table, where it can easily be mistaken for trash or accidentally knocked onto the floor!
Tip #2. Clean Your Retainer Before Storing It
Cleaning your retainer regularly keeps it fresh and odor-free and helps remove the tartar and plaque that can build up on its surface over time. Every time you take your retainer out, give it a good rinse and use a soft-bristled toothbrush and cool water to gently scrub away any buildup. You can also soak it in a glass of water with a denture-cleaning tablet or a small amount of baking soda for a deeper clean. If you aren’t going to be wearing it after cleaning it, make sure to store it in a case with adequate airflow to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
Tip #3. Avoid Harsh Chemicals and Heat
Not all cleaning methods are safe for your retainer, and using the wrong ones can cause serious damage. Avoid soaking your retainer in bleach or alcohol-based mouthwash, as these products can break down the delicate materials it’s made from. Also, never boil your retainer or leave it in a hot car, since heat can warp both the plastic and the metal components, causing it to no longer fit correctly. This also means you should avoid running it through the dishwasher!
Even with perfect care, retainers don’t last forever—so if you begin to notice yours feeling too tight when you’re wearing it, or if there is obvious damage, don’t hesitate to contact your orthodontist. That said, if you stay consistent with these good habits, you’ll enjoy your straighter smile for life!
